DOCX export help
Every document in your Application Pack can be exported to DOCX so you can send it to a recruiter or upload it to a hiring system.
DOCX export gives you an editable Word document for each finalised piece of the pack. It is available from the project once the rewrite is ready. You can export from the Review screen or from the dedicated Export page, and both produce the same files.
What to expect from an exported DOCX
CareerIbis offers more than one export template. The template you pick on the Review or Export screen determines the layout you get. Different templates make different trade-offs between visual structure and how predictably they render across editors.
- Classic ATS is the safest single-column option, with straightforward headings and bullet lists.
- Other templates may use more visual structure. For example, an Executive Brief layout may use a sidebar or a multi-column first page.
- System-safe fonts are used so the file opens cleanly in most editors.
Opening the file
DOCX files open in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice Writer, Apple Pages and most other modern editors. If you plan to email the CV, Word or Google Docs are the safest choices. If you plan to upload it to a hiring system, DOCX is usually the preferred format.
Formatting shifts that may occur
- Font substitution: if your editor does not have the exact font, it will use its closest match. Line lengths may shift slightly as a result.
- Page breaks: different editors calculate page breaks differently. A page-two heading in one editor may appear at the top of page three in another.
- Spacing: a paragraph that fits neatly in one editor may wrap onto an extra line in another.
- Sidebars, columns and other visual structure: where a template uses them, Word, Google Docs and other editors may render them slightly differently. Open the exported file in the editor you plan to send from and review it before converting to PDF or uploading it.
Before you convert to PDF
- Open the DOCX in the editor you will convert from and read the whole file end to end.
- Check the page breaks fall in sensible places.
- Confirm no text is cut off at the margin.
- Check that any edits you made after export are actually in the file you are about to convert.
- Only then export to PDF.
Preserving your edits
Edits you make in Word or another editor live in that file on your computer, not in CareerIbis. Save your edited copy under a clear filename so you do not confuse it with a later re-export from CareerIbis.
Troubleshooting
The download did not start.
Try the export again. The most common cause is a transient network issue. If your browser blocks the download, check for a permissions prompt near the address bar.
The file opens but looks different from the preview.
Different editors render the same DOCX slightly differently. Font substitution and page breaks are the usual culprits. Open the file in the editor you plan to send from and adjust page breaks there if needed.
Where should I export from, the Review screen or the Export page?
Both work and produce the same file. Review is convenient if you have just finished a rewrite. The dedicated Export page is convenient if you are downloading several documents in one visit. Neither is required.
The export still fails after several tries.
