How rewrites and refinements work

A rewrite tailors your CV or resume and covering letter to the role. A refinement pass adjusts tone, emphasis, structure or role alignment.

The rewrite step turns the Alignment Report, your Candidate Profile and your intake material into a CV or resume tailored to one specific role, together with a matching covering letter. It is not a rewrite of your career. It is a re-presentation of your existing evidence, aimed at the target role.

What the first rewrite does

  • Reorders and reshapes your existing experience so the most role-relevant material is easier to find.
  • Uses wording that matches how the target role is described, without copying the job description verbatim.
  • Draws on your Candidate Profile for confirmed facts and figures.
  • Preserves the underlying evidence (dates, employers, titles, achievements) unchanged.

What should not change in a rewrite

  • Employer names, dates and titles you provided.
  • Facts and figures: a rewrite should never invent numbers.
  • The overall truthfulness of the story.

What may change

  • The order in which achievements appear.
  • The phrasing used to describe responsibilities.
  • The emphasis given to a piece of adjacent experience relevant to this role.
  • Which achievements are foregrounded in the summary or first section.

Weak-to-stronger example

△ Weak example

Managed operations and reported to senior leadership.

Two verbs, no scope, no result. Every candidate can say this.

▲ Stronger example

Ran day-to-day operations for a 12-person support team across two sites; provided a weekly written brief to the head of customer service and quarterly volume forecasts to the COO.

Same underlying facts. Now the reader can picture the role.

How transferable experience may be surfaced

Where the report identified genuine transferable experience and you confirmed it, the rewrite may re-anchor it towards the target role. For example, a previous project management responsibility can be described in terms of the stakeholder rhythm the new role calls for. The underlying activity does not change; the framing shifts to what the role actually needs.

What refinement is for

Each Application Pack includes one refinement pass. It is designed for targeted adjustments to the first rewrite, not for starting again.

  • Adjusting tone: more measured, more direct, more human.
  • Rebalancing emphasis so a different achievement leads.
  • Tightening structure: shorter summary, cleaner section order.
  • Sharpening alignment where the rewrite drifted from what the role actually asks for.

What refinement cannot fix

  • Missing evidence in your Candidate Profile or intake: add it there first.
  • A fundamentally different target role: that needs a new project.
  • Factual mistakes in the underlying inputs: correct the source and regenerate.
If the first rewrite feels wrong in a big way, the answer is usually upstream: return to the Alignment Report, the gap prompts, or your Candidate Profile. Refinement is a scalpel, not a restart.

Why review before exporting

The rewrite is a draft prepared from your material. You are the only person who knows whether a particular sentence is precisely accurate, whether a figure is current, and whether the framing represents your work fairly. Review carefully before you export or send anything.

Pre-export checklist

  • Every employer, date and title is correct.
  • Every figure is one you would be comfortable defending.
  • Nothing in the covering letter overreaches beyond what you can back up.
  • The tone reads like you, not like a generic template.
  • Any transferable experience is framed honestly.
